Data published by the FDA confirm that 4 out of every 10 Americans have at least one organ graft. But these data are misleading, since the data do not distinguish between biological and non-biological organ transplants. When asked, most Americans believe that organ transplants are performed on living donors. This makes sense, because of the all life is sacred mentality. However, in reality organ transplants are performed not only from living donors, but from deceased donors, too, and from living donors after brain death. Not surprisingly, organ transplantation is most popular among the young, those who have donated blood and those who have contributed tissue for medical research, such as blood and tissue stem cell donors. If you look at a typical donor profile, he has an abundance of living relatives, says Dr. Caplan, one of the foremost experts in the field. I have never met a man or woman who would decline to be a donor.

What is particularly exciting is that the MSLs not only treat patients safely and effectively, but also have generated significant knowledge of their value in preclinical disease models. Recently, a phase II clinical trial of the MSL for multiple sclerosis was started in New Zealand. The trial was developed with the aim of utilizing the proven safety of MSLs and the benefits of monotherapy in the preclinical mouse model for multiple sclerosis. Preliminary data from the study indicates that as expected, the MSL is well tolerated at the dose levels used in the trial, and is able to reach the target CNS tissues within 2hrs of systemic administration, with an approximately 50% reduction in target T-cells in the brain. It is also promising that the active MSL immunotoxin is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, as evidenced by the disruption of blood brain barrier integrity in the preclinical multiple sclerosis model, a model that requires the induction of a brain lesion in order to see any disruption to the blood brain barrier integrity.
