Martindale: The Complete Drug Reference
Martindale: The Complete Drug Reference is a reference book published by Pharmaceutical Press listing some 6,000 drugs and medicines used throughout the world, including details of over 180,000 proprietary preparations. It also includes almost 700 disease treatment reviews. It was first published in 1883 under the title Martindale: The Extra Pharmacopoeia.Martindale contains information on drugs in clinical use worldwide, as well as selected investigational and veterinary drugs, herbal and complementary medicines, pharmaceutical excipients, vitamins and nutritional agents, vaccines, radiopharmaceuticals, contrast media and diagnostic agents, medicinal gases, drugs of abuse and recreational drugs, toxic substances, disinfectants, and pesticides.
Martindale: The complete drug reference
The disease treatment reviews, 675 in all, located in the chapter introductions, have also been revised to reflect current trends and provide key references. Cross-references to these reviews appear in the monographs of the cited drugs. The reviews can also be accessed via the general index.
PRESENTED AS a two-volume boxed set, this is the world's most comprehensive and reliable guide to drugs and medicines. At 4,688 pages, it is no pocket reference. With more than 6,000 drug monographs, 180,000 preparations and 54,000 reference citations, it has greater international coverage of its subject than any other resource.
The Martindale is a true universal reference and its information wealth is unparalleled. It is not a book one would use every day in clinical pharmacy practice, but a pharmacist can also not live without. Although one can certainly understand why this reference work must be so expensive, the high price will be a barrier especially for colleagues in developing countries. It is in the interest of society in general that every pharmacist can consult this drug reference book when needed. Significantly cheaper access of the on-line version should therefore be considered, for instance for limited time periods or a limited number of searches.
